LEARN HOW TO USE DISCORD

LEARN HOW

TO USE DISCORD

There are many messaging and chat apps out there, but none are more popular among web3 communities and DAOs than Discord is. For a new user of Discord, joining a project's server can often be quite overwhelming. There can be dozens of categories with hundreds of channels being used to communicate by thousands of users every day, so having a general idea of how to operate within Discord is often helpful in preventing information overload when first getting started. Another thing to remember is that nothing beats experience, so while we will do our best to prepare you, you'll still learn more from actually doing.

The first thing you'll need to do is create an account and log in. Once you log in, you'll need to join servers to get in on the discussion. Below is a link that will take you directly to the Gnars DAO Discord server.

Now that you've made your way into a server, let's take a look at how to navigate the user interface and channels. First, you'll notice that the servers you've joined will be displayed along the left side of your screen. Servers can actually be grouped together into folders by dragging one server onto another one. Next, along the left side next to the servers list, you'll notice the list of categories with their associated channels below. Finally, you'll find several buttons near the search bar which control the sidebar on the right side of the screen.

Every discord server is different, but once you have spent time in a variety of them you will notice consistent patterns with the way they are organized. As shown in the example above, you can see that the categories located at the top of the channels list contain information and utilities. Often you'll find these types of channels grouped at the top of the channel list like this for convenient access. These channels will highlight relevant announcements and social updates, provide quick access to frequently asked questions and official links, and a channel for verifying your NFT holdings.

There are also different types of channels which can contain sub-channels: either threads or forum posts. The image below on the left depicts a thread within a standard channel. These threads contain focus discussion on certain topics. A list of all the created threads can be found by clicking the thread icon in the top right corner as highlighted in the large screenshot above. The image below on the right depicts a forum channel with the posts contained within it. While these are two different formats, they accomplish the same objective of providing a place for focused discussion.

Navigating discussions and operating within Discord gets much easier with time, but there is commonly an additional step required once you've joined a server to verify that you are a holder of a certain NFT and gain full access to the server. There are different apps that are commonly used among Discord servers to verify on-chain ownership: CollabLand, Guild, and Vulcan, just to name a few. This will be covered in a future section.

Another feature you should be aware of are Events. Teams are able to schedule events within their Discord server that can link to a voice channel or external location such as Twitter Spaces. To bring up the Events window, click on the Events button beneath the server banner in the top left, like in the screenshot from the Lil Nouns server on the left below. This will bring up the menu, shown the right. Here you can RSVP by clicking the 'Interested' button so you will receive a notification when the event is scheduled to start. You can also obtain the link to send people directly to this event by clicking the 'Share' button.
